He said, “Well in our part of the world, they live together. I feel so privileged to have so many relations and we all live together. Yeah yeah yeah!” I didn’t say anything, but in my mind, I thought, “So what’s the big deal if mine lives separately…I don’t feel any distance from them. What’s the point?” From his behavior, I could tell that he took pride in the joint family system and thought that any system that deviates from the joint family system is lesser than it.

Probably he thought that his elders loved him more than mine loved me since they lived with his family. It was a discomforting feeling and did not leave a good taste in my mouth. My friend was indeed judging my relations with my elders beyond my parents through my family system, which was inappropriate.
