I am *** (valid names, address, and contact), one of your constituents who has taken this opportunity to demonstrate to you the need to adopt the Green New Deal bill (H.Res.109) that was tabled in the Congress by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The bill aims to transform the current overreliance on fossil fuel, improve community resilience, open other sustainable earning methods, and subsequently champion the environmentally-friendly initiatives (US Congress, H.Res.109). To a great extent, all the contents in the bill are aimed to reduce the adverse impacts of global warming that have led to climate change, an aspect that continues to wreak havoc in the lives of individuals, your constituents included. Despite the continued denial and scorn of the scientific studies that are in place that have predicted irreversible and devastating destruction of the globe, one clear aspect is that the current and the future generations are bound to bear the brunt of such adverse impacts of climate change that are attributed to greenhouse emissions and carbon emissions that emanate from fossil fuels (National Climate Assessment, n.d). As you know, the US, under the stewardship of the Trump administration, withdrew the country from the Paris Climate Accord, an aspect that caused major polluters a field day as they can pollute the environment with impunity. Like a few other countries, the US is skeptical about the whole aspect of climate change, and the Trump administration has been vocal in opposing any initiative that could eradicate such instances even though the US contributes to almost a third of the global carbon emissions. Such development does not only pose a threat to the current and future generations but also exposes the US as myopic and mostly concerned with short-term economic benefits at the expense of the health and the well-being of future generations.

Various reports by the reputable organizations such as the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the United States’s Fourth National Climate Assessment have indicated that is the current scenario is allowed to continue; the world would experience a global temperature of 2 degrees Celsius by 2050 (National Climate Assessment, n.d). The scenario could worsen further by 2100 when such temperatures could surpass over 3 degrees Celsius compared to the pre-industrialization era. When such instances arise, there would be detrimental consequences that await a man (National Climate Assessment, n.d.). For instance, it is estimated that over one trillion dollars would be spent annually to mitigate climate change's adverse impacts. This vast sum could have otherwise channeled in eradicating global poverty, addressing homelessness in the US, offering education to bright students in the country, and promoting sustainable development. At the moment, the global temperature stands at 1.5 degrees Celsius and that aspect is expected to change since climate denial is taking shape in various countries and major countries that are the biggest emitters of carbon globally blatantly refusing to join forces in combating the carbon emissions (National Climate Assessment, n.d). The fossil fuel has also positioned itself as the central pillar in the global economy, and the implementation of any green initiative as championed by the Green New Deal have encountered massive opposition and the companies such as Exxon and other entities that deal in fossil fuel or guilty of emitting colossal quantity of carbon have marshaled funds to defeat any probable legislation that goes against them (Roberts, n.d.). The fight to reduce carbon emissions and promote green initiatives and sustainable development have become a personal concern to despite it degenerating to the societal dilemma where objective truth and scientific studies are denied, sacrificed and countered with 'alternative facts' to defeat a phenomenon that poses an existential threat to the planet and its inhabitants. The rising tides, the storms, unpredictable weather patterns, wildfires, and other natural catastrophes experienced around the world currently are directly attributed to climate change that continues to overwhelm the globe with little interventions in place (National Climate Assessment, n.d). Despite the mitigation measures in place by various countries such as carbon tax and offering subsidies to green initiatives, one plain truth is that such efforts largely remain inconsequential to a great extent.

My support for Green New Deal Act, as I initially said, honorable member, is a personal struggle that does not only entail a moral deed but also grounded on the knowledge that for future generations to exist, the current generation must place a platform that would not put their existence in jeopardy. When I was eight-years-old, I was diagnosed with asthma and other respiratory complications, so there were a dozen children in our neighborhood. Through various investigations and studies, it was established that the high prevalence of respiratory illnesses among the children in the neighborhood were down due to the local coal mining activity in the area, the oil exploration, and the fact that the neighborhood was surrounded by manufacturing entities that emitted carbon in bulk. With limited resources and influence, the individuals in the neighborhood embarked on advocacy and lobbying to have such entities closed down. However, because of the financial war-chest, these entities had coupled with the political influence they wield, it was relatively hard to defeat them and have such activities stopped or relocated. To date, the struggle with respiratory ailments remains part of our lives even though such instances were inflicted and induced by individuals with a vested interest who cared to expand their economic well-being and gave little concern to the health of the people in the neighborhood. Therefore, by you agreeing to support the Green New Deal Act currently at the floor of the Congress, you will not only helping in creating a platform for the future generation to thrive, but you will also be saving people from other areas from suffering like some of us who continue to bear the brunt of such acts. Again, the Green New Deal Act offers a blueprint where various individuals in the country would be empowered and sustainable development achieved at the grassroots levels, a development that would guarantee resilience and improve the well-being of individuals in the society (US Congress, H.Res.109). In that regard, I beseech you to look beyond the party position and affiliation and think of what you can do to save the current situation, something that will go down the history books as one of the actions that you undertook to save the planet. Without any doubt, the Green New Deal Act will act as a stepping stone where you can use to demonstrate your consciousness of the current global disaster in waiting. I believe your actions and understanding that the GND Act is of great significance to your constituents would help address the climate change menace.

Several studies have shown that for the adverse impacts of climate to be reversed, there is a need to cut down global emissions, reduce dependence in fossil fuel, and ensure that activities that threaten the environment are minimized. I believe that the Green New Deal Act offers solutions to address such instances and provides a framework upon which the aspect of sustainable development could be grounded and nurtured for eternity. By promoting community resilience, offering subsidies to green initiatives, and reducing reliance on fossil fuels, the GND Act plays a vital role in setting the pace in which broader legislation to combat climate change could be grounded to realize long term goals (US Congress, H.Res.109). In that regard, the Green New Deal Act provides a platform that would not only focus on reduction of carbon emissions but also ensure that instances that revolve around resilience, economic well-being, and collective approach in reducing the adverse impacts of climate change are reduced while simultaneously encouraging economic growth and sustainable development (US Congress, H.Res.109).

To a great extent, I understand the bottlenecks attributed to the Green New Deal Act that is currently on the floor of Congress. Save for the fact that Republicans have openly opposed it; there are aspects of costs of implementation as well as the realistic timeframe stipulations that the bill wants such provisions to be implemented (Roberts, n.d.). Taking into consideration that the implementation of that bill could lead to massive losses of jobs and irreparable economy for a foreseeable period, the bill is bound to counter objections and resistance from various members of the Congress regardless of the political affiliations or party position. The US currently has a public debt of over twenty trillion dollars, and the implementation of such provisions in the bill could bring everything to a halt (Roberts, n.d.). However, through concerted efforts, the members of Congress will be able to amend the bill to achieve the practical threshold for its implementation and adoption through a bipartisan approach. Therefore, on behalf of your constituents, the current and future generations, and those who continue to bear the brunt of adverse climate change, I beseech you to join hands in supporting the Green New Deal Act. Such an act will save the current and future generations, open avenues for sustainable development, and strengthen communities' resilience in the long run.
