However, minimal progress has been made in meeting this goal. Moreover monitoring by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) also reveals that based on 2003-2006 data, there is a 33.3% prevalence rate for those aged 6-11 and a 34.1% rate for those in the 12-19 age range (CDC, 2009). Most of the statistical figures on obesity have indicated an increase from previous years, and in most age ranges covering pre-schoolers to adolescents, the trend has been an increase in numbers.

The figures above imply future major problems for these children. Schoenstadt (2009) discusses that obese children often later become obese adults who are vulnerable to major health risks and problems including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and other cardiovascular problems. The numbers of obese adults remain high because many of them have been obese since they were children. With these above considerations, this paper now seeks to study the causes of childhood obesity and the treatments and interventions which may be applied in order to reduce childhood obesity.

There is a need to conduct this study because the numbers of obesity are continuing to increase and we need to act on this problem now.A paper by Deckelbaum and Williams (2001) set out to discuss the increasing frequency of childhood obesity, its impact on lifestyle perspectives, its comorbidities, the emerging racial/ethnic responses to biological contributors to obesity, and the possible remedies for reducing the obesity epidemic during the childhood years. This study compiles studies related to the current subject matter.

Databases in the United States such as the NHANES were searched in order to yield the results established by this paper (Deckelbaum & Williams, 2001). The paper discussed that the increase in the prevalence of obesity has been seen in the United States.
