?Controlling Menopausal Symptoms the Natural Way with Diet, Exercise and Vitamins: An Annotated Bibliography Cutler, W. (2009). Hormones and Your Health: The Smart Woman's Guide to Hormonal and Alternative Therapies for Menopause. John Wiley and Sons. This book discusses the importance of hormones and hormone replacement therapies in the management of menopause as well as sheds light on alternative therapies that incorporate diet and exercise in the management of menopausal symptoms. Published in 2009, this book is a scholarly as well as a popular work and is written by Winifred Cutler who obtained her PhD in biology from University of Pennsylvania and did her postdoctoral work in behavioral endocrinology from Stanford University. This book sheds light upon the dietary component of the management of menopause but does not discuss the effects of exercise in detail. However its emphasis on vitamin D and calcium is of great value to my work as they are important in the management of osteoporosis which is a common manifestation of menopause. Thacker, H. (2009). The Cleveland Clinic Guide to Menopause. Kaplan Publishing. This book takes a holistic approach towards public conceptions, misconceptions and available treatments for menopausal symptoms. Written in 2009 by Holly Thacker, director of the Center for Specialized Women's Health at the Cleveland Clinic, this book is a popular work that makes it easy for every woman to comprehend her symptoms and manage them through her doctors as well as her diet and exercise. This book also provides an extensive index which makes it easier for me to use it in my research. Faruk, A. (2010). Short-Term Exercise Approaches on Menopausal Symptoms, Psychological Health and Quality of Life in Postmenopausal Women. Obstetrics and Gynecology International . This clinical study was conducted by Abike Faruk who works at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Bayindir Hospital, Ankara, Turkey. In his research, Faruk demonstrated the positive effects of exercise in menopausal women evident by a fall in cardiovascular events as well as osteoporosis. The psychological effects of menopause such as depression were also reduced and replaced by a general feeling of well-being. This research is extremely important for my work as it is a qualitative as well as a quantitative proof of the effects of exercise on menopausal symptoms. Kronenberg, F. (2010). Menopausal Hot Flashes:A Review of Physiology and Biosociocultural Perspectives on Methods of Assessment. Journal of Nutrition , vol 140, no.7. This article is a scholarly work by Fredi Kronenberg who is affiliated with the Clayman Institute of Gender Research at Stanford University. In this article, Kronenberg discusses the link between decreased severity of menopausal symptoms and the intake of soy in Japanese female population that is facing menopause. Although this piece of work is very specific, it deals with a dietary component that has the potential to control menopausal symptoms and is therefore important for my work. Wingert, P. (2009). The Menopause Book.Workman Publishing. This book is written by Pat Wingert who is an award-winning journalist, a correspondent for Newsweek and specializes in the fields of medicine, health, and demographics. This book combines the latest medical interventions in the management of menopausal symptoms with the recently proven non-medical interventions such as diet and exercise. This book allows me to compare and contrast the two lines of therapies and their effectiveness. Hagey Allison (September 2008). Role of Exercise and Nutrition in Menopause. Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology , 627-641. This article is written by Allison Hagey who is affiliated with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Columbia University Medical Center, New York. In this article the writer explores the symptomatic management of menopause which includes reducing the risk of cardiovascular events, depression, osteoporosis, diabetes and cancer by modifications in one’s diet and regular exercise. This article is invaluable to my work due to its coverage of all aspects of management of menopausal symptoms without medical intervention. Nihira, M. A. (2009, September 16). The author of this article works at the Women’s Centre, John Radcliff Hospital, Oxford, UK. This journal article explores the effects of exercise in the early postmenopausal years during which the rate of loss of bone mass is maximum. This is coupled with loss in muscle strength. The study shows that a regular exercise regimen of certain duration and intensity can decrease the rate of this loss and control the symptoms of menopause. Dodin, S., & Cunnane, S. (2008). Flaxseed on Cardiovascular Disease Markers in Healthy Postmenopausal Women: A Rabdomized, Double Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial. Nutrition, Vol 24, 23-30. This study was conducted by a group of physicians and PhD holders working at reputed institutes across North America. This is a recent study that shows the lowering effect of flaxseed ingestion on plasma fatty acids that which in turn reduces the risk of cardiovascular events among postmenopausal women. This study is important for my work as it denotes a possible dietary management of cardiovascular disease in menopause. Khadigeh, M., Debra, A., & Margaret, B. (2006). The Relationship Between Exercise, BMI and Menopausal Symptoms in Midlife Australian Women. International Journal of Nursing Practice, vol 12, 28-34. This study was conducted in 2006 on a group of Australian women experiencing menopausal symptoms. Khadigeh, a midwife, Debra and Margaret, both of whom are PhD holders, conducted this research and concluded that exercise is effective against somatic and psychological effects menopause. Since this study aims specifically at the effects of exercise, it provides vital information for my work. Read More
