It has a sprawling campus offering both postgraduate and undergraduate courses in tourism management

The campus is located in the outskirts of Hyderabad a kilometer away from the national highway. The college was established only one year back, the various facilities were slowly coming up on the campus as the establishment activities works are slowing adding up the requirements to the campus ambiance. The college has three academic batches out of which two were in post-graduation, one in under graduation with a sum total of 150 students supported with 30 teaching staff and non-teaching staff. The students have to take ten minutes to walk if they want to board any transport means, to eat, to shop anything for their stay in the campus hostel.

Current scenario

The working hours start at 9:30 am in the morning breaks for a lunch at 12:40 pm with a break in between at 11:15 am. The College has a dining hall to cater the food facilities daily for both day scholars and hostellers. The payment is done monthly to the caterers .food is served only three times a day morning breakfast, launch and dinner. A person doesn’t get any snacks or eateries in between the sessions, as there was no facility on the campus other than the dining hall.

The management was worried about the mid-term food facility because the students and staff has to go out to have a bite of anything in between their free time. The organization has started looking for means to establish this facility. The menu of the caterers in the dining hall is with all the heavy items and quite costly (Rs. 21 per meal) . The student has to walk two hundred meters away from the academic block to have their launch in the hot sun and has to return back to their sessions as attendance is compulsory for all of them. Some students who avoid heavy foodstuff have to be starved, as there is no alternative.

Is there any scope for a new business entity, which specially caters to the hunger of the mid-times? Is that a new market base for foodservice?

Yes, an institution of this sort with a limited number of students and staff and the proximity of the food facility is far away to the campus there is an opportunity for a small business venture. The initiative came from the senior students who were in the problem right from the inception of their course. A low-income food outlet, for the students, within the campus. The main reason, which has provoked this initiative is the experiences with the difficulties encountered in availing the refreshments.

As this would be located within the campus the administration of the college thought that it should be managed by a committee comprising of a permanent representative from the college side and limited active members from the senior students and some assisting students from the junior batch who would then take over in their next year as active members. The food items are to be brought from a bakery at a distance of 4km from the campus.

The food outlet was proposed to be developed in due course of time to cater to the various requirements of the college also during the conferences and events held at the campus. The captive market would be the Students of them at breakfast, lunch, and dinner the day scholar students of the institute who will dine in the dining hall.

The students can be provided with entertainment through movies on weekends. The college authorities assured to provide free power, a salamander to heat the bakery food items like puffs and hot dogs, LCD projector and speakers, furniture for the counter setup and to stack the materials of the food outlet. Initially, there will be only a limited menu to cater to, as the outlet gains its reach, the subsequent additions can be done. As the institute is a hospitality-related institute and has food production labs, the food items can be prepared on the campus and served at a subsidized rate to the students.
