My thoughts and opinions that i have created What I am studying in college has turned out to be so important to me and the communityat large because of what it has made me realize. Taking the course at first may not have mattered much as I only did it as a career, but at this moment I am proud of myself because of the fact that have discovered how influential and unique this course is (Langley, 2009). This class has greatly changed my judgment and reasoning, because it made me view everybody in another way. I was able to learn that nobody would wish for misfortunes to befall them and that fate is what can bring good or bad luck in a person’s life. Sometimes we all need to know that we cannot decide or escape our calamities easily as they are usually unpredictable. It is through such things that people’s lives change dramatically and before they know it they are physically, emotionally or socially disable and challenged. Once people are in such situations, they find themselves isolated as the rest of the community regard them as problematic and unfit to mix with others. My course has made me realize that this kind of perception is very wrong and the worst ever (Powaski, 1987). It is important for everyone to know that human beings are all the same despite their situations in terms of health, state of living or finance. My class taught me a lot in terms of human life and its possible variations and I was able to know that life may start well and end bad and vice versa. It is also important as I learnt, that in life people should expect anything and when a person does not understand other humans’ unfortunate situation and show remorse, they are likely to also suffer in the same way due to luck of attention from sympathizers. I also was able to understand that people may see the unfortunate on the streets or neighborhood and ignore them not because they despise or hate them, but because they do not know how to approach the situations. Sometimes people also ignore them due to the fact that they experience a creepy feeling due to how the individuals look (bad state) even though they may be willing to assist (Langley, 2009). I will also admit that before the course I had a somehow similar problem of not knowing how to go near such a person, but now I am professionally capable of doing what needs to be done in order to change the persons situation and at least make them feel accepted and loved in the society. Taking a career as a Community Help profession has made me proud because apart from assisting people in the community to change their living conditions and encourage them in life, I have also been able to make other people who are fortunate to understand that they are not more special or important than the less fortunate. Through my course, my way of thinking greatly changed and instead of having a shallow mind on issues such as community help and change, I am now able to think critically and weigh things step by step starting from being in those peoples’ shoes and imagining how they feel, their wishes and their experiences especially in terms of isolation from the society. This group of people according to what I have learnt has no one else to look up to except us as the community which is capable of assisting them. I learnt that luck of knowledge on such an issue is one of the factors contributing to poverty and diseases in our community yet these are some of the things which the community keeps preaching that it needs to eradicate. It is through people like us that such plans can be accomplished. This topic takes me back to problems that were caused by calamities which I would say were intentional such as the Atom Bomb on Japan for instance and the Confrontation in the Tiananmen Square. In these two incidences, many innocent people were killed and injured especially women and children. Students were also killed in large numbers and many were injured. Most of these people who suffered during the two incidences were people living normal lives (Chaffee, 2011) just like most of us now, but that was cut short unexpectedly by the calamities and now they are helpless with no direction in life. Considering such a situation, those people with negative attitudes towards such people should be made to understand that there is no difference between them and the poor or sick people. They need to understand that such situations cannot be avoided and can get to them just in the same way. Victims of such calamities as Atom Bomb in Japan and Tiananmen Confrontation Square are no different from others such as war victim survivors like in Vietnam or those of Mass Killings and Massacres in African countries such as Rwanda and Sierra Leone. The cases in the African countries for instance create huge populations of refugees who end up in camps which luck so many humanitarian needs. They are also a good example of people who seriously need the help of Community workers like us so that apart from receiving other needs such as food and sanitation, they are also able to be given emotional support and comfort by being advised and counseled. Apart from people whose poor living conditions and situations may have been caused by accidents and calamities, there are also those who have never know anything but poverty (powaski, 1987). Such people are all in need of the help from their fellow humans, though according to my way of thinking they may take it differently. This is because those whose lives were changed by experiences that came in later may be more challenged that those who are used to a certain kind of suffering, and from my understanding I know that in as much as both groups need help from us and other concerned organizations and people, victims such as those of Atom and refugees for instance may need more support than the poor. This class also helped me through so many issues, and I am encouraged because after being able to sharpen my knowledge on what it means to be needy and what it takes to change the situation. I have hopes that the community will change in a big positive way. The class on community work, does not pay well but thinking about what its capabilities are, it is still very important as it changes a person’s perception and way of viewing other people especially the less advantaged. It is also a subject that has a strong influence in the community at large and if half of the society was to be educated on the issue, our society would be close to perfect in terms of humanity. The teaching in this class apply appropriately to Chaffee’s theory on critical thinking, and for this course, an individual is enabled to achieve their goal through thinking analytically. When I chose the career for community work, may main goal became changing and touching other people’s lives. I needed to make those who are not in any challenging position to achieve knowledge about the appropriate way to treat and relate with people who are disadvantage, without being discriminative and scared. The other thing was for me to ensure that community work develops into a common thing in the community, so that the majority of people are willing to join in and promote it more. I also wanted for the needy to feel like the rest of the society is with them and understand them fully. I also need to come up with a plan to ensure it happens. Achieving the goals would also benefit me in many ways and the most important one is my satisfaction. If I work without using exhausting my skills my way of thinking which was greatly impacted by this class in a positive way, has managed to change the lives of many people and also their perceptions. My new thinking skills taught me that I must go step by step to achieve my goal, and that is why I thought and came up with the idea of studying the subject in detail as one of the steps. Before I could take any steps I knew that I needed to observe my clients and to come up with the best approach. Everything about this subject needs analysis starting from the client and the society at large. I also needed to think seriously on how I needed my project to end or look like at the end, and what I strongly need is to achieve the goal that made me chose the course in the first place. The well-being of the less fortunate in the society is my aim. That means the participation of the rest of the people in the society is also required and through critical thinking then I will not get what I want. Otherwise critical thinking is the best tool that can help me arrange my strategies systematically and obtain my objective. This class has enabled me to be so considerate to every kind of person in the society and to understand the community deeply (Chaffee, 2011). I have also been able to know how the community operates and how every corner of the community looks like and what they experience. I now know that people who are fortunate in the society especially the young ones may not easily understand anything about poverty and its experiences unless they are taken through classes and courses on the subject. Teaching such topics to people who have never experienced hardships is the best way to open up their minds and provide them with skills that would help them to reduce the margins between them and the less fortunate. In this way, the fortunate people will be able to easily interact with these victims and be of assistance to them. I will conclude by saying that, it is also wrong to judge anyone, without finding out what they know on this subject, and the best way is training and helping everyone familiarize with the nature of the situation. This would help us to get used to being professionally analytic whenever we are pursuing different goals. We will also understand that the poor the sick and the unfortunate, do not live the lives they live because they want to, but due to circumstances, so that all of them can try and find ways in which such situations can be improved if not changed completely.
