Alfred North Whitehead, the eminent British mathematician and philosopher once commented in one of his essays on education that “Education is the acquisition of the art of the utilization of knowledge” (Whitehead A. N. The aims of Education) I have always wanted to pursue higher education in the field of electrical engineering. Ever since I can remember, I have had this insatiable desire to take things apart to see how they work. Most of these had to do with electrical and electronic items and more often than not I was recruited to repair things in the home.

When I began my search for a university to pursue higher education in my chosen field, I was looking for an institution where I would be encouraged to research new ideas and put my knowledge to use in an atmosphere of creativity and co-operation. My choice was naturally narrowed down to those institutions that had the reputation of producing excellent students in the field of engineering who were given opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skills in industry related environments. It is therefore not surprising that Prairie View was among the top schools on my list.

I have for sometime been enthusiastic about developing low cost and easy maintenance electrical/electronic items that can be used in communities that do not enjoy the facilities enjoyed by those in developed nations. I hope that I shall be able to do something towards achieving this goal during my time at university. Towards this end, the team of outstanding faculty members at Prairie View, many of whom have authored books, and are actively involved in many research projects, was one of the factors that attracted me to Prairie View.

The opportunity to interact with such learned professors in research and development projects and programs where I may get an opportunity to realize my dream was a very strong factor in my choice. I would like to expand my career options by enhancing my leadership skills as well as gaining hands on experience during my stint at university. I have read about the various programs that are oriented towards just such a goal for students at Prairie View. This together with the opportunity of mixing with students from a wide spectrum of society and gaining from their experiences is a very attractive proposition.

Another factor was that Prairie View offered scholarships to needy students like me for whom the fees paid for education without this facility could prove prohibitive. Prairie View possibly agrees with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton when she says "I believe that college shouldn’t just be a privilege for the wealthy – but an opportunity for anyone with the talent, determination and ambition to learn.” (Clinton Hillary Rodham) Being an international student with limited funds this was a big boon .
