October 17, 2008 MKT 351 MW 12:15 30 WSJ Analysis Citation: Ellen Byron & Keith J. Winstein, “Patch Boosts Libido for Some Older Women”, Wall Street Journal, Thursday, November 6, 2008.Abstract: Addition of new patch that shows to have an increase in sexual enjoyment for some older women. Unfortunate possibility of cancer prevents usage of patch by American women for unforeseen time. Major American corporation, Procter & Gamble Co., invests the previous nine years, since 1999, in the hopes of getting federal approval of its patch called Intrinsa that assures a greater sexual enjoyment for those women who use it themselves.

Most notably, “The New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday published a company-run study of the patch, which delivers a steady stream of testosterone, a hormone associated with sex drive in men and women,” (Byron & Winstein, 11/06/08). A small percentage of women report, according to the article, a lower level of interest in sexual practices, but hold a doubt in whether or not such a lack of interest would even be considered a medical condition of sorts. Despite whatever benefits may to be had of the patch, whatever risk factors for illness remain the primary consideration for those who seek to decide whether or not it will get federal approval for public usage.

Federal regulators have stated that in order to achieve approval for the public, they would in fact require a larger test study to be done with a great level of participants in order to better assess the level of effects after using the hormone treatment. At the time, Procter and Gamble had yet to say whether or not they would go about getting the approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Other related drugs for the use of aiding female sexual behavioral patterns do not seem to be on a path either towards approval by any approving body.

Relevance to MKT 351: For any form of drug to be approved, such agencies are given the task of giving the approval needed for customer consumption and use. In this case, the FDA is placed with the task of approving the drug. Without it, the company is unable to legally market the drug to the public in such a manner.Reactions: For many men, as well as women, the inability to truly enjoy sexual relations with those who have been chosen can be quite unfortunate. As it is natures way to have a time in life to where women enter the period of menopause, that can in many ways impede upon the truly enjoyable nature that comes from engaging in intimate practices with spouses or lovers.

For these, as well as other drugs, the approval of organizations such as the FDA, is very important for many reasons. While crucial for the ability to market them in the first place, they are also important to those who attempt to buy the products in the first place. Without such a positive ruling from an agency like the FDA, it can in fact put into question the safety of the product and therefore leave the user with great doubt as to whether or not to use the product in the first place. As there are many products available to fix this sort of problem, any sort of doubt in safety, as well as ability to achieve solid results, can force companies into such means that they are faced with losing customers to other companies whose products are not placed into any question or doubt.

The health factors of using such drugs are a great concern to a number of different groups of people. In the quest of achieving greater sexual pleasure can come the real risk factor, to whatever degree, of contracting serious health issues that come from the drugs usage. As there are many companies presently who have yet to get approval for their individual drugs in order to sell them publicly, it is quite a testament to the power of federal approval and what can happen if it is not given. The body, when it reaches a certain age, finds itself without the same level of hormonal presence that it once had at the time of its youth.

As there are some women who have yet to consider the issue of a lack in sexual desire to be one of a medical concern, it can be said that a medical fix may not be the true and correct response to the greater issue at hand having to do with the nature of sexual interest.Works CitedByron, Ellen & Winstein, Keith J. “Patch Boosts Libido for Some Older Women.” The Wall Street Journal Online.
