McCandless died sometime in August 1992 after starving for over one hundred days. Jon Krakauers work "Into the Wild" is a non-fiction text founded on the true story of Christopher McCandless. Published in 1996, the book was preceded by Krakauers article "Death of an Innocent" that had been published in Outside in January 1993. According to Krakauer, McCandless adventure into Alaska was some spiritual pilgrimage. Whatever they set out to learn through the pilgrimage, the position of this paper is that McCandless failed at their mission.

In the end, their life was a total waste. This position is justified in subsequent paragraphs. Chris McCandlless ventured into the wild in search for a first-hand experience that was beyond the ordinary (University of South Carolina 4). Chris seemed to have been fed up with the routine of ordinary life. As a young man from a relatively wealthy family, it is likely that Chris’ family expected them, having graduated from college with a good grade, to land a decent, well-paying job, climb up the corporate ladder and end up at the senior management level of a leading American company.

In addition, it is probable that Chris’ family expected them to marry and raise a family. Unfortunately, Chris had other ideas. To them, that pattern of life was too boring to endure; they needed a new lease of life. In order to achieve this experience out of the ordinary, Chris went as far as changing their identity. They no longer considered themselves Chris McCandless, but Alexander Supertramp, one of the characters in the books they had read. Chris considered Supertramp a master of their destiny (University of South Carolina 4).

Whereas most people desire to break away from the routine of everyday life, one would argue that Chris’ move was extreme, even dramatic. Perhaps there were less drastic
