Writing Response 6: CW 3 Brainstorming Changing the Teaching/ Grading System (5 minute speech) October 7, (Speaker’s catching the audience’s attention phase) Are your happy when your friends and relatives know that you got an F or failed grade in your class? (Speaker looks from to audience for a response, pauses for 10 second.). In your K – 12 years, what is the normal reaction of your parents when they see that you got several failed grades? Will they be happy? In the same way, as parents, how will you feel happy to see your child’s failed grade?

(Speaker pauses 10 seconds to await the audience response). Well let me answer for you… a failed grade shows that you or your children have a problem that needs immediate remedy. (Explanation by speaker phase) Failed grades can come from several causes (Green 81). Normally, people would insist that a failed grade indicates the student has low intelligence quotient (I.Q.). This is a possible cause. However, there are other realistic or viable answers for a failed grade. One good reason is finance.

The student too poor that he or she cannot afford to buy the school textbook. Some of you may be laughing at the person’s unfortunate economic plight. However, I assure you the scene is a reality around the world. How can you study without a copy of the school textbooks? Further, another poor student has no money to pay for transportation to visit school, especially during the pre-teen years (Toby 46). Consequently, the student generates lots of class absences. To the student, being absent from class translates money save from paying for school transportation.

In addition, the poor student can use those absent days to find an hourly or part time work. If the student avoids absences, the student may run out of money. When this happens, the student may die from hunger. In this case, we have to understand the student’s necessity to be absent. Furthermore, one reason for failed grades is the teacher’s failure to make contact with some of the students (Crudup 41). Teachers are not superheroes, like superman or batman. Teachers are trained to teach to most of the students.

However, there will always be slow learners. If the teacher slows the teaching pace to allow the slow learners to catch up, the bright or more intelligent student may feel bored with the teacher’s mundane teaching strategy. The student can only do so much because the mentor is addressing several individuals in the class. To resolve the situation, I propose a new teaching /grading system. The teacher has to incorporate the person’s culture into the grading system, based on each student’s current learning status (Killen) 11.

To the poor student who cannot afford to report to school everyday, the teacher can give a summary of the week’s lessons, including lesser but complete examples, in order for the poor student to get higher grades, especially students who are financially constrained to visit school everyday. The teacher can reduce the grade benchmark for the poor students. Likewise, the teacher can lower the grade benchmark for confirmed low I.Q. students. The student should not suffer from one’s birth defect, a low I.Q. The teacher can give less complicated lessons to the not-so-gifted student in order to upgrade the student’s capacity to get higher grades.

(Speaker’s asking the audience to act phase) Based on the above analysis, I persuade you, my eagerly attentive audience, to make up your minds, let us join forces to inspire the teachers to change the current teaching/ grading system of our academic institutions (speaker stretches his hand to audience asking for your positive response, their outstretched hands as agreement to the speaker’s request).
